One-act play cast competes

Albany High’s one-act playcastandcrewpresented two local performance s of “Oz” on Monday, March 4 at the high school auditorium, preparing for district competition that was held Wednesday, March 6 in Haskell.

Resultsfromthecontest were not available at press time.

Albany reprised last year’s presentation of ‘Oz’ with a few cast changes.

“The kids had so much fun performing the show last year that they wanted to try it again,” director Chanel Hayner said. “We placed fourth in district last year and were the alternate, but they feel they can improve on the play this year to advance.”

The Albany cast and crew packed up props, sets and costumes for a dress rehearsal in Haskell on Tuesday, returning on Wednesday for actual competition.

Hayner said that she was very happy with the performances on Monday for the student body and for the community that evening.

“They were really able to improve by having two performances before the contest,” Hayner said. “That helped us a lot to work out any little problems that were noted.”

“Oz” was written by Don Zolidis as a take-off on the original “The Wizard of Oz.”

“It has been a bit of a struggle to find times to practice when everyone can be there,” she said. “The kids are all busy doing other activites too, but since many of the parts are being played by the same people as last year, it has helped that they were already familiar with their lines.”
