Old Jail summer camps to start Aug. 3

The OJAC offers a variety of free summer classes for students that will be entering the first through 12th grades.

The summer art camps offered this year are Cultural Connections: Italy!, Things on Strings, Teen Workshop: Inspired by Helen Altman, and Re-Create!

The classes are free, but participation numbers are limited and students are entered on a first come, first served basis, so early registration is recommended.

Italy

Italian culture, including music, food, and art, will be explored at Cultural Connections: Italy!

Up to 30 first through sixth graders can be accommodated at the workshop scheduled for 10:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3.

Participants need to bring a bag lunch to the event.

Puppet Workshop

The two-day Things on Strings puppet workshop is limited to a maximum of 30 children and is typically the most popular of the student summer art classes.

It is for designed for children in grades one through six, and those registering need to plan to attend from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on both Tuesday, Aug. 7, and Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Attendees will each create a one-of-a-kind kinetic puppet.

Teen Workshop

On Friday, Aug. 10, up to 20 students entering eighth through 12th grades will use a variety of media to create artwork at Teen Workshop: Inspired by Helen Altman

Altman is the OJAC’s current Cell Series artist.

The workshop runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., and lunch will be provided to the registered participants.

Re-Create!

Fourth graders through seventh graders are invited to register for Re-Create! and there is room for up to 30 students in the class.

Repurposed and recycled materials will be used to create art at the Wednesday, Aug. 15 summer student program.

Those attending need to bring a brown bag lunch with them to the 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. class.

Registration

Application forms for the summer student programs may be picked up at the museum or clipped out of the ad in the July 12 issue of The Albany News.

Parents are urged to contact the Old Jail Art Center with any cancellations so that students on waiting lists can be contacted.
