This summer, Old Jail Art Center children’s programs are going virtual.

OJAC education director Erin Whitmore said that the August camps are usually offered in a one-day workshop format.

“This year, the education department is offering a daily virtual experience to campers,” Whitmore said. “Daily camp videos will post each morning at 10:00 a.m. on our Facebook page, including step-by-step crafts and activities by OJAC educators.”

All summer student programs are provided free of charge for children in first through sixth grades and are limited to 30 students for each week because of the supplies.

During the week of Aug. 4-7, the OJAC staff will host Cultural Connections Camp: Peru. Students will investigate the music, food, and art of Peru.

The week of Aug. 11-14 will have participants creating kinetic artwork called Things on Strings: Puppet Workshop. The artwork will be inspired by artifacts or art from the OJAC collection.

The final week, Aug. 18-21, registrants will explore Frontier Days: The Tonkawa!. Students will experience the culture of the Native American Tonkawa through historical crafts and activities.

Whitmore said camp kits will be mailed to the address provided by the registrant.

“Kits will include supplies and materials for each day,” Whitmore said.  “The kit will also include a password for access to that week’s camp videos so camps will remain special for registrants only.”

Registration for OJAC Summer Student Programs is limited and ends July 20.

To register, parents should go to theojac.org/summer-workshops.
