Old Jail camps continue

By Lynsi Musselman

Old Jail Art Center’s virtual camps started this week, with another workshop scheduled for next week.

OJAC education director Erin Whitmore said the Cultural Connections Camp had a great enrollment with several campers from out-of-town and around the state.

There are three spots available for the Things on Strings and Tonkawa Camp next week.

“If a local family is interested in signing up, they can call the OJAC by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6,” Whitmore said. “We can prepare a supply kit and call the registered camper when it is ready to be picked up at the museum.”

For patrons who missed out on the virtual camps, there are still various programs, activities, and stories on the Facebook page and the OJAC webpage at theojac.org.

Staff Blogs

Each Monday, a staff member shares a blog post, and this week OJAC archivist Molly Sauder wrote about Albany native Berta Hart Nance.

Nance is most notably remembered for her poem “Cattle” that is part of the introduction for the Fort Griffin Fandangle.

Her first poem was published at the age of 13 by the Albany News.

Craft Kits

For visitors more interest in crafts, the OJAC is supplying craft kits to make origami friendship fortune cookies for Friendship Week.

Local families are invited to pick up the supply kits in the trunk at the OJAC front gates.

The weekly craft activity called Art@Home Survival Kits provides a different activity each Monday that combines visual art with STEM and motor-skill development.

The OJAC is also open to all visitors in person Monday though Saturday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Masks are required and available for patrons visiting the OJAC.
