OJAC workshops continue

The Old Jail Art Center’s summer workshops got underway this week, with several in-person camps on the calendar for students in first grade and up.

On Wednesday, campers met in the museum’s Stasney Room for “Re-Create!” The workshop for older students in grades 4-6 was designed to find artistic re-uses of found and recycled materials.

On Friday, Aug. 4, participants will meet for the traditional Cultural Connections Camp, which this year highlighted Egyptian art and culture based on pieces in the Old Jail’s permanent collection.

Both of this week’s classes were already full at press time, as is the always popular puppet workshop set for next Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 8-9. Students in grades 1-6 can construct their own puppet inspired by global cultures and artifacts from the museum collection.

A couple of days later on Aug. 11, students in grades 1-3 will be “Under the Sea” “sea-riously fun day” of aquatic crafts and games inspired by ocean life from the museum collection.

OJAC education director Erin Whitmore said that there were two spots left for that camp at press time on Tuesday.

Online registration has ended, so registrants must call the museum by 5:00 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 4 to claim the open spots.

Whitmore reminded parents that any museum member gets to send students for free, and non-members can purchase an annual membership starting at $15, and then register their students for free.

Participants are reminded to bring sack lunches for the classes that will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., which is everything except the puppet workshop.
