The deadline to register for this year’s annual summer camps for kids at the Old Jail Art Center has officially passed, but there are still a few openings, and OJAC education director Erin Whitmore said that late registration will be accepted on Thursday (today) if those places aren’t already filled.

A session for older kids – Re-Create! – will kick things off Wednesday, Aug. 2, with activities planned for grades 4-6.

Fun and facts about Egypt will follow on Friday, Aug. 4 for students in grades 1-6, and other workshops are planned Aug. 8-9 and Aug. 11.

As of Tuesday, there were still four openings in each of the sessions.

Registration can be completed from the Old Jail’s home page (theojac.org), by going directly to the registration form at theojac.org/student-summer-camp-registration, over the phone by calling 325-762-2936, or in person at the museum.

Children of OJAC members can participate free, with a $15 per-camper cost for non-members.

For the three 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. sessions, participants are reminded to bring sack lunches.

Workshops Schedule

Wednesday, Aug. 2 – Re-Create! for grades 4-6. Campers will find artistic re-uses of found and recycled materials. 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.

Friday, Aug. 4 – Cultural Connections Camp: Egypt for grades 1-6. During the annual investigation of art, food, and games from around the world, campers will learn about the culture of Egypt. 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 8-9 – Things on Strings  for grades 1-6. The popular marionette and kinetic puppetry workshop is inspired by global cultures and artifacts from the museum collection. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (No sack lunch needed.)

Friday, Aug. 11 – OJAC Under the Sea! for grades 1-3. Early learners will be treated to a “sea-riously fun day” of aquatic crafts and games inspired by ocean life from the museum collection. 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Bring a sack lunch.
