Senior Lanxton Viertel catches the Hamlin players flat-footed as he bounces a lay-up off the backboard during Tuesday night’s district game against the Pied Pipers. This week’s win puts the Lions at 2-0 in district and 5-1 after a holiday tournament, even though they just completed their second “official” practice on Monday following an extended football playoff season that led most of the basketball varsity to a state football championship. Nancy Smith Elementary students got to try their hands at gardening on Friday prior to spring break.

New garden beds were provided for each grade leveltoplantseedlingsthat they started in January.

The project is funded andsponsoredbytheSHAC committee, led by school nurse Heather Nitschke.

The goal is to educate students about where their food comes from and why it’s important to eat healthy.

The plan is to harvest produce that is ready in May for the health fair and produce a dish such as salsa.

A self-watering system was added after the planting, but students will have the chance to tend their gardens over the next few weeks.
