By Donnie A. Lucas

A number of students in grades two through eight competed in the district UIL Academic Meet over the last few weeks, with the second through fifth grade elementary students earning third place overall and the grade six through eighth competitors taking fourth place.

The meets, which were hosted by Albany schools, were conducted virtually for the most part again this year due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The writing portions of the competition were conducted in November among all the schools and emailed to Albany to be judged locally by a group of English teachers.

Stamford hosted the speaking events for the elementary students only, while the junior high speaking events for the district were recorded and judged locally.

Team Totals

The elementary division of grades 2-5 was won by Anson with 418 points, followed by Haskell with 330 points. Albany was third with 318 points, with Stamford in fourth with 316 points. Cisco was fifth with 296 points,, followed by Hamlin with 104 points and Hawley with 39 points.
