Albany News

Summer vacation for Albany students will end in just under a month, when the 2018-19 school year starts on Thursday, August 16, at 7:55 a.m., and officials at Nancy Smith Elementary School have requested that parents of returning students go online and register their children for the upcoming year if they have not already done so.

“Several still need to complete the online registration,” said principal Jonathan Scott. “We will have computers available to anyone needing to complete the registration process during new student registration on Aug. 1.”

The online registration system for returning students at NSES is available at reg.albanyisd.net, and the Shackelford County Library also has free internet access available during normal library hours.

Online registration is not available this year for students new to the district or for those enrolling at Albany Junior/Senior High, and those students should enroll in person at the corresponding school office.

Parents of all students new to NSES and students that still need to enroll in either pre-kindergarten or Head Start should make plans to register their children at the elementary school office between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, and should bring with them to the registration the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and social security card, as well a parent’s drivers license and proof of residence.

“A utility bill, showing the parent or guardian’s name and address, can be used for proof of residence,” Scott said.

AJ/SH registration will start on Wednesday, Aug. 9, according to secondary principal Edward Morales.

“Most of our students are already registered for classes, they just need to pick up their schedules, and they always have to fill out some paperwork,” the principal said. “Once they have filled out all their forms and turned them in, we can start issuing their laptops.”

Teachers will officially start their school year with comp days on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 9-10, a staff breakfast and staff development day on Monday, Aug. 13, and teacher workdays on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 14-15.

Head Start and Pre-K

Openings were still available in both the Head Start and pre-kindergarten classes at NSES, according to Scott

Parents of children who did not qualify for Head Start should come in to see if the child might qualify for pre-kindergarten.

Children can be deemed eligible for the programs if they: are eligible for free or reduced lunch program, have a parent that is on active duty in the military or who was injured or killed during military service, are homeless, unable to speak and comprehend English, in CPS, or the child of a Star of Texas award recipient.

Students who will be four years of age prior to Sept. 1 have priority over younger students if space is limited.

Parents enrolling students in either pre-K or Head Start need to provide proof of income along with the other required records for school registration listed earlier in this article.

Meet the Teacher

A “Meet the Teacher” event is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 14 at both local campuses.

The event at AJ/SH is geared toward students new to the secondary school and will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the snack bar.

Parents and their elementary students can meet teachers at NSES earlier the same evening.

Pre-K through second grade teachers plan to meet with parents from 5:00-5:30 p.m. while third through sixth grade teachers will be available from 5:30-6:00 p.m.

A list of student classroom assignments at NSES will be posted at the event, although most teachers will have notified the parents before that night.

School supply lists for elementary students are available and are posted online at the NSES website. They will also be placed in The Albany News, and posted in various stores in town.

STAAR Test Results

“We had several students meet the Student Success Initiative requirements on the third administration of the STAAR in fifth grade,” said Scott. “Additional meetings for those that did not meet the requirement will be held in the next few weeks to determine a plan of accelerated instruction to prepare them for testing requirements in the future.”

Facility and Faculty

Although most positions at the local school district have been filled,  AISD was still looking for someone for a janitorial position at AJ/SH, according to retiring administrative assistant Amanda Moberley on Tuesday.

The typical maintenance of the school buildings, including carpet cleaning and floor waxing, is also ongoing at both schools.
