Members of the National Honor Society recently elected officers and discussed upcoming projects for the school year.

Kiana Roberson was elected as president of the group, while Brooklyn Abbate was named vice president. Jade Bean will serve as secretary, and Robyn Trail was picked as treasurer. Jaci Chapman will serve as reporter and Braylyn Abbate will be the parliamentarian.

All of the officers are seniors and were inducted into the organization last fall during their junior year.

Members of the current junior class who meet the 90 or above grade requirements are expected to be notified soon with an invitation to apply for membership.

New members must fill out an application detailing their activities, awards, honors, and community service, which will then go to a faculty council to considered for induction into the group.

The local chapter is sponsored math teacher Ashley Terrell, assisted by FCCLA teacher Jennifer Marshall.

Terrell said that the grade criteria will again be based on the four core classes of math, science, language, and history, plus any foreign language courses. Electives are no longer included in the grade calculation.

“Members must compete in at least one UIL academic event both their junior and senior years to maintain their membership,” Terrell said.

The sponsor said that she expects that the group will continue to sponsor the local Toys For Tots drive in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps.

A tutoring program has been implemented this year with members assigned to specific teachers’ rooms in the junior high during WIN time to assist students.

Honor Society members are required to log at least six hours of community service during each semester of membership.
