Officers for the Albany Chapter of the National Honor Society were elected last week and upcoming projects were discussed for the 2021-2022 school year.

Sarah Cotter was selected as president, with Luke Ivy named as vice president. Susie Cormack was picked as the secretary for the year, along with Clara Holson as treasurer and Ty Everitt as reporter.

All of the officers are seniors and were inducted into the organization last fall.

Members of the current junior class who meet the grade requirements will be notified during the next week with an invitation to apply for membership. New members must fill out an application detailing their activities, awards, and honors, which will then go to a faculty council to be considered for induction.

District librarian Jenny Scott, who co-sponsors the group with counselor Michaela Bradford, said that the induction ceremony for this year’s new members will be held on Sunday, Nov. 21 at the high school auditorium.

Scott reported that NHS is sponsoring a canned food drive during the month of October as a challenge with the Cross Plains chapter.

The project will benefit ResourceCare food closets in both communities.

The winner of the competition will be announced at halftime of the Albany vs. Cross Plains varsity football game on Nov. 5.

Students are urged to bring cans of food to be placed in donation bins at the school.

Scott said that NHS members will assist with the Toys for Tots drive conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps. Staff Sgt. Doug Beaty is expected to once again use NHS members to help with a fundraising luncheon to earn money to buy toys. The public will be able to donate toys to benefit local children.

Honor Society members are required to have six hours of community service per semester.
