Local residents may still submit names for the Shackelford County veterans memorial marker.

Organizer Mary Kay O’Connor said that while it is too late to have names added to the monument in time for this Memorial Day, which will be Monday, May 30, she is continuing to work on the project.

O’Connor said veterans do not need to be deceased nor do they have to have served during wartime to be included.

Veterans’ names should be submitted the way they will appear on the marker as well as proof of service.

The cost of engraving each name is $95.

“The cost has gone up,” O’Connor said. “The man who does the engraving has to come from Eastland, and he’s got to pay those high gas prices.”

Limited scholarships are available if cost is preventing someone from adding a name to the marker. Those seeking a scholarship should contact O’Connor to see if they qualify for assistance.

For more information or to submit a name, contact O’Connor at 325-660-2498.

Memorial Day

The Albany Lions Club will not sponsor its traditional Memorial Day program at the Aztec Theater this year.

Lions Club president Bob Skelton said scheduling difficulties left the Lions too little time to organize the event for this year.

“We were planning to do it, but there were some notification issues, and we didn’t get started on time,” he said. “I feel like we’ll try to host it again next year, but we’ll have to approach it a little bit differently.”
