Water customers in the City of Moran will see an increase in their bills starting with the Oct. 1 billing cycle.

The new rates include an increase of $5.75 to the base charge that covers the first 2,000 gallons of usage.

For excess usage above 2,000 gallons, the new rate will be $14.50 to $23.00 per 1,000 gallons, compared to the current flat rate of $11.30 per 1,000 gallons.

Council members said that the excess usage is calculated based on a lowest to highest usage tier, and is an incentive to be conscious about water conservation.

“Most residents use the minimum amount of water,” said Teresa King, secretary for City of Moran. “Outside of regular usage is typically for pools and farms.”

According to a statement from the city council, the increase will help support repairs and replacement of aging equipment and infrastructure, which will lead to fewer main breaks and interruptions in service.

King explained the utility costs to the city have increased, and there is currently a $21,000 deficit.

The free water rate study was conducted by Communities Unlimited, Inc.

“Five options were presented to the city council,” King said. “The city council was given a month to review the study before voting on an option.”

She said the fifth option was chosen. All the options, along with the in-depth study, are public information and can be requested at the city office.
