Moran students, staff stay busy

The calendar may say it’s summer vacation, but students and faculty from Moran are continuing to learn even during the break from classes.

Supt. John Denson spent this week attending the Texas School Safety Conference in San Antonio, while agriculture teacher Minnie Denson Bennett is in Greece as part of a study-abroad program as she pursues a master’s degree.

Earlier this month, students from Moran’s meat judging team and cheer squads attended camps.

Safety Conference

Denson said the aim of the safety conference is to inform school administrators on how to follow new laws and procedures to ensure student safety.

“We discussed everything from fencing to when to film,” he said. “We heard a DEA officer who talked about problems with fentanyl and opioids.”

Denson said dealing with such issues is easier in a small school like Moran, but said the DEA presentation was “eye-opening.”

New Gym Floor

Denson said the Moran ISD board has approved installation of a new floor in the Moran gymnasium at a cost of almost $100,000.

Work should be completed in August.

“We got bids to both fix and replace, and it’s not that much more to completely replace it,” he said.

Meat Judging Camp

Moran’s meat judging team spent June 7-9 at Texas Tech’s camp, which drew students from across the country. Ellis Hise was sixth-high individual and Allen Hebel was 16th.

“We went for three days and stayed in the dorms,” Denson said. “Tech’s national championship team trained our kids.”

Cheer Camp

Four Moran cheerleaders and the school’s mascot spent June 12-15 at the NCA Cheer Camp at Hardin-Simmons. The group will now teach what they learned July 28 at the Moran Mini Cheer Camp.

“We had so much fun at cheer camp and are ready to teach our new skills to the mini cheerleaders at cheer camp in July,” Moran cheer coach Alyssa Gregg said.
