Moran ISD has organized a new chapter of the National Honor Society. The chapter held an organizational meeting March 22, to vote on bylaws and a constitution, along with electing two interim officers.

Johnnie Hise will serve as president and Hannah Rogers as secretary for the remainder of the 2021-2022 year.

“One of the first things I noticed when I came here was Moran didn’t have a chapter,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said. “Principal Jo Hise got the message out to the community for volunteers. We actually had more volunteers than there were places on the committee because everybody was excited for this to happen.”

A faculty committee chaired by Bryce Hughes organized the chapter. Other committee members were Matthew Hise, John Hughes, Anita Wheat, Jill Bennett, and Carly Henson.

“Bryce Hughes has done a great job chairing the committee,” Denson said. “They had to come up with bylaws and a constitution.”

Eight students, roughly 25 percent of Moran’s high school enrollment, qualified for membership.

Denson said National Honor Society memberships provides several benefits for students as they prepare for college.

“It’s always nice to be able to list NHS on your resume when applying for scholarships,” he said. “It’s an extra activity and helps with all types of scholarships.”

Denson added that the program isn’t strictly about academic achievement.

“It’s a chance for students to give back, too,” he said. “They will plan things to help build the community.”

Bryce Hughes said the community service aspect is already underway, with NHS members collecting toiletries, clothes, and nonperishable food for victims of the Eastland County fires.

UIL Academics

Moran had 13 students compete in the District 13-1A UIL academic meet on Wednesday, March 23 at Eula.

Results will be reported next week.
