Two Moran meat judging teams scored well in contests over the weekend at major livestock shows.

Moran teams placed 25th and 35th out of 43 teams on Saturday, Feb. 19, at San Angelo. On Sunday, Feb. 20, the teams finished 33rd and 41st out of 77 teams in San Antonio.

Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said two members of the first team scored extremely high in placing classes at San Angelo.

“Johnnie Hise scored  286 out of 300 and Hannah Rogers scored 246 out of 300,” Denson said. “They’re really doing well in placing classes and getting better every time.”

Denson said all team members raised their scores in retail identification.

“We’re really trying to work on retail ID,” Denson said. “Students have more than 100 individual retail products. They have to be able to identify the species, the primal cut, the retail cut, and how to cook it, and there’s a written exam along with it.”

Hise and Rogers were joined on the first team by Allen Hebel and Cotten Campbell. The second team consisted of Alli Scott, Alayna Baker, LeAnna Sikes, and Cutter Campbell.

“Those were the very first contests for those kids on Team 2,” Denson said.

One-Act Play

Moran will have 12 students competing in the District 13-1A One-Act Play event on Monday, Feb. 28, at Eula.

Nine cast members and three technical crew will perform “The Girl in the Mirror” by Bruce Jacoby under the direction of teacher Bryce Hughes.

The cast and crew were scheduled to attend a clinic on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Stephenville to be critiqued on their performance ahead of the district meet, but Moran principal Jo Hise said the trip could be scratched because of bad weather.

Science Trip

Moran eighth grade students were scheduled to attend a program at Morgan Jones Planetarium in Abilene on Wednesday, Feb. 23.

“That’s part of the TEKS for the STAAR test,” Denson said.
