Moran mayor issues disaster declaration
By Kathy Thomson
The community of Moran, along with towns across the state, throughout the nation, and around the world, is adjusting to the impacts of maintaining social distancing while going on with everyday life as much as possible during the coronavirus pandemic.
As of press time on Tuesday, April 14, there were no positive cases of COVID-19 in Moran or in Shackelford County. However, mayor Steve Taggart issued a disaster declaration on April 3 due to the imminent threat of the virus, cancelling all public gatherings of greater than 10 people.
Moran City Hall is closed to the public except by appointment.
“Folks seem to understand, if they stop and read the sign on the door,” said Teresa King at Moran City Hall. “We’ve had some who have made appointments. We can take water bill payments through the door slot, but we have some customers who prefer to pay in person using cash.”
Payments can also be made by signing up for direct deposit or by mail, King said.
Emergency problems with water or sewer should be phoned in to 325-762-0643.
Community Garden
Eddie Hill rototilled the Moran Community Garden last Thursday.
This was the third plowing for the new garden, and rows have been set out.
“We plan to have some rows planted before the end of this week,” said King.
Everyone who helps with the garden project can share in the produce.
Workers are reminded to practice social distancing, staying at least six feet apart from each other whenever members from more than one household are at the location at the same time.
Local Ministries
According to King, the drive-in style Easter service at First Baptist Church Moran on Sunday, April 12 was well attended.
“It was a hit!” King said. “We had a really good turnout.”
A public announcement system was used so everyone could hear the service from their own automobile. Attendees were allowed to rotate through for the Lord’s Supper, or they were served in their car if they preferred.
Members of the Apostolic Gospel Church celebrated Easter with singing outside the church’s front doors.
“We celebrate a risen Savior,” said pastor Cynthia Tollett. “It’s so good to know the tomb is empty.”
Closet Angels in Moran is closed and will not be accepting any donations until May.
Sewer Grant
The environmental study phase of the proposed sewer project ended on March 31, and King said she is still completing and sending in that paperwork.
