Moran Independent School District will have to make up two days missed because of weather cancellations, principal Jo Hise announced.

Moran will now attend class on Friday, April 15, and Monday, April 18, which were originally scheduled as school holidays.

“The state requires that students attend class for a total of 75,600 minutes,” Hise wrote in a letter to parents announcing the decision. “The district had enough minutes to cover the loss of days earlier in the year for bad weather. However, the cancellations on Feb. 23 and 24 were enough to force school administrators to make some adjustments in the spring calendar. Moran ISD students and staff will make up the deficit in classroom minutes by eliminating the Easter holidays, Friday April 15, and Monday, April 18.”

Moran officials said the move will not affect spring break, which is scheduled for Monday, March 14, through Friday, March 18. Classes will resume after spring break on Monday, March 21.

Dr. Seuss Week

Moran is conducting Dr. Seuss Week this week in celebration of the children’s author’s birthday, which was March 2.

“We’ve got some different dress-up days and activities,” Hise said. “We’re just trying to encourage more reading, find the fun and the love and the joys in it.”

Spring Fling

Moran’s Spring Fling will be Friday, March 11, with each grade level operating booths with carnival-style games.

The senior class will begin selling hamburger meals at 5:00 p.m. with games starting at 5:30 p.m.

The event has been moved inside to the gymnasium and cafeteria because of expected cold weather.

Hise said the event serves as a fundraiser for various class projects.

Activities will last until 7:00 p.m.

Contestants must purchase tickets, which will then be used to play various games, at the PTO Booster Barn.

Meat Judging

The Moran meat judging team placed 32nd out of 65 teams last week at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The team also competed in contests at Fredericksburg, placing 15th, and Clear Falls, placing 16th, during the three-day trip.

In placing classes at Houston, Alayna Baker scored 293 out of 300 with Johnnie Hise scoring 281, Hannah Rogers 275, Cotten Campbell 265, and Ellis Hise 238. Johnnie Hise also scored 225 out of 280 on Retail ID.

Allen Hebel and Vivi Green also participated.

“They’re getting better every time,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said. “Every time we go to a contest, they learn from the last one.”
