Moran ISD reported a total enrollment of 97 students for all grades, down slightly from the end of last school year.

Superintendent Dr. John Denson said he expects some fluctuation in the figure as other area districts begin classes.

Principal Jo Hise said she is still receiving calls about taking transfer students.

“We’ve had a really good start to the school year,” Denson said. “The kids were ready to come back, and they’re wanting to learn.”

DEAR Project

Moran is encouraging the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) initiative with teachers reading to elementary students each day.

“Any time you take time to read to a student, and they want to listen, that’s a good opportunity,” Denson said.

Hise said librarian Betty Galvan read two books – The Grouchy Potato and The Rainbow Fish – to kindergarten and first grade students this week, accompanying each book with an art project.

“We’re really pushing all the teachers to read to the kids during the day so they can hear what good, fluent reading sounds like,” Hise said. “We want to help make each and every one of these students stronger readers.”
