Moran Independent School District will conduct its Veterans Day program at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 in the school gymnasium.

Members of American Legion Post 423 from Cross Plains will make a flag presentation, students from sixth grade, kindergarten and Pre-K will sing, and Moran graduate Jeff Martin will perform as the school recognizes veterans from the community.

“Any veteran from the community is welcome to attend,” principal Jo Hise said. “We’ll have a special seat for them up close to the stage.”

Hamburgers will be served following the ceremony, according to superintendent Dr. John Denson.

Thanksgiving Meal

Moran will serve its Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The event is open to all community members.

Meals will cost $3.83 for adults. Student lunches are free.

The schedule is still being worked out for different grade levels, but families will be able to dine together regardless of students’ grade levels.

School Calendar

Moran finished the second six weeks on Friday, Oct. 28, and started the third six weeks on Monday, Oct. 31.

The last class day before Thanksgiving will be Thursday, Nov. 17. Classes will resume Monday, Nov. 28.

The fall semester will end on Dec. 21. The spring semester will start Jan. 10. The first week of classes in January will be Tuesday through Friday as a staff development day is scheduled for Jan. 9.

FFA News

Moran FFA will compete in the Big Country District contest Monday, Nov. 14 at Cisco.

“This is the big one we’ve been preparing for,” FFA adviser Minnie Denson said. “We’re putting in a lot of practice hours.”

Moran has attended Leadership Development Events at Snyder, Abilene, and San Angelo to prepare for district. On Monday, Oct. 31 at Angelo State, Case Murk placed second in Senior Creed Speaking, and Moran was fifth in Ag Advocacy.

“These have been good contests with our kids getting great experiences,” Minnie Denson said. “It’s only going to get better from here.”

On Saturday, Nov. 5, Moran will attend the Texas Tech meat judging contest.

“We’re just taking four kids this time,” Minnie Denson said. “It’s going to be our first contest to get ready for the spring. We intend to have eight kids for two meat judging teams in the spring.”

Denson said this weekend’s contest is mostly a practice session for the spring.

“The kids can spend time with Dr. Markus Miller, who is the head of the meat science department,” she said. “They can ask him questions, and he’ll give them the right answers and guide them in the right direction. That way, they get it for the next contest.”

Dairy Time

The Southwestern Dairy mobile unit will visit Moran on Wednesday, Dec. 7 for a presentation that will include milking a cow.

“They will talk to all the kids from Pre-K through 12,” Minnie Denson said. “I think it’ll be an interesting experience. I don’t think a lot of kids around here have been around milking before.”

Graduation Plans

Moran will hold 2023 graduation ceremonies May 26 at Cisco College auditorium.

“We will double our graduating class this year,” John Denson said. “Last year we had four seniors; this year we have eight. We filled up the gym, and it was pretty hot.”
