Moran ISD to continue 4-day week
By Sam Waller
The Moran Independent School District board voted unanimously at its Monday, March 20, meeting to accept the proposed calendar for the 2023-24 school year, continuing the district’s four-day school week.
Superintendent Dr. John Denson said the four-day week has been quickly accepted within the district.
“We took comments from every teacher,” Denson said. “They were able to tell us confidentially whether they liked it or not, and there was zero against it. Everybody liked the way it worked this year.”
Denson said one change is no Fridays are scheduled as class days next year.
“This year, we had the Friday after Labor Day and the Friday we came back from Christmas,” he said. “We’re not going to do that next year. We’ve added a couple of Fridays at the end of the year for weather days just in case so we don’t have to amend the calendar, but as of now, no Fridays next year.”
This year, an amended schedule, which was approved at Monday’s meeting, was required after the district missed two days in February.
The missed days will be made up on Friday, April 14, and Friday, May 12.
One Act Play
Moran’s One Act Play cast and crew competed in bi-district Monday, but did not advance to area.
Emily Murk was named to the all-star cast, while Ellis Hise and Daphne Crews were honorable mention all-star cast.
Moran teacher Bryce Hughes, who served as director for the schools production of “Little Women,” said the program has made strides after finishing as a district alternate last year.
“It was a little heartbreaking,” Hughes said of being eliminated. “The process with the show has been long. I hope all the young kids I have will come back next year and still do it.”
Hughes said plans are in the works for one last public performance for the Moran community, but a date has not yet been picked.
Enrollment
Denson announced Moran’s enrollment is now 126 students from Pre-K through high school, an increase of more than 30 since the start of the school year.
“We’ve had about 30 percent growth since the start of year,” Denson said.
