Four  Moran ISD agricultural students headed to the West Texas A&M Meat Judging camp Sunday, June 20.

This is the first time that Moran FFA students have participated in this type of event.

“This camp is our first step in growing the FFA program here at Moran ISD,” said new superintendent John Denson.

Denson is a certified agriculture teacher along with new MISD ag teacher Minnie Denson and secondary teacher Matthew Hise. This is the first time Moran ISD has had three certified agriculture teachers on the staff at once.

The Meat Judging camp will test students on their knowledge of food safety and food science as well as the history of meat.

“This is an academic endeavor where students can take what they learn in the classroom and have a chance to actually apply it,” Denson explained.

Denson is hoping this camp will help open some doors in the future for the FFA students at Moran ISD.

“There are job opportunities directly related to the knowledge and skills our students will learn from competing in contests like these,” he said.

Because this is the students’ initial visit to the camp, Denson is just looking for growth.

“This is our first time competing, and there are some very good and experienced schools at the camp with us,” said Denson. “We are looking for our students to learn and gain more knowledge this time around, and we will definitely  be coming back.”

Students and their sponsors returned from camp on Tuesday, June 22.
