Missed days should not affect schedule

Moran Independent School District, along with several other schools in the Big Country area, cancelled classes last Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 5 and 6, due to forecasts of extremely cold and hazardous winter conditions.

Classes resumed on Friday, Feb. 7 with all bus routes and other school operations back to normal.

MISD does not need to “make up” the two days missed last week, because the current schedule includes 76,800 minutes, well above the 75,600 required by the state, according to superintendent Danny Freeman.

“We have two-and-a-half days worked into our schedule for bad weather days or other emergencies that would require a school shut down,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “Should the situation arise in which we would need to utilize any number of days above and beyond that, we would simply make those days up on any given day outside our normal schedule.”

Cheer Meeting

The cheer and mascot meeting scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 6 was postponed due to the wintery weather conditions.

Upcoming Breaks

Friday, Feb. 14 is an optional/required fifth day.

“Please remember that only students with excellent attendance, behavior, citizenship, and classroom performance are permitted to take these optional days off,” said Freeman. “If you have not been contacted directly by your child’s teacher, then please send your student to school.”

The optional/required fifth days are great opportunities for students to get specific, targeted academic instruction, according to Freeman.

“In the event your child is not required to attend, but you would like to send them for academic extension services, then as always, feel free to send them to school,” he added.

Children who attend school on Friday, Feb. 14 will be released at noon.

MISD campus will be closed on Monday, Feb. 17 in honor of Presidents Day.

School will resume at the usual times on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and continue on the normal schedule until spring break, March 9-13.
