MISD year starts with 114 students

The Moran Independent School District began classes Monday with 114 students enrolled from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
“It was great,” Moran ISD superintendent Dr. John Denson said. “Everything ran to plan. The kids all seemed glad to be here, and the teachers were, too.”
Denson said the district’s enrollment was holding steady compared to recent years.
“The senior class is the lightest,” he said.
The pre-K and kindergarten programs have a total of 16 students with eight in each group.
The elementary grades had a total of 48 students. There were six students in first grade, seven in second, six in third, 10 in fourth, 11 in fifth, and eight in sixth.
The junior high had 17 students with eight seventh graders and nine eighth graders.
The high school enrollment was 33 students and included the largest and smallest groups. The freshman class topped the list with 12 students, while there were seven sophomores, 10 juniors, and four seniors.
Ag Practicum
While the senior class may be few in number, its members will play a large role in a new class at Moran.
“We’ve got a special thing going on with our seniors,” Denson said. “They’re all going to be in an ag practicum together, which will be a class in the normal school day.”
Denson said the students will be learning how to be ag teachers.
“They will take on some of the duties of the ag teacher from time to time to learn how to do it and kind of step in those shoes,” he said. “It’s a career advancement class, and the purpose of it is to let them see what it takes to be an ag teacher.”
Denson said the seniors will be active in developing the students who will eventually take their place in the agriculture program.
“They’re going to be working a lot with our seventh graders,” he said. “They’ll be helping train them for teams for FFA competition and working with them on growing gardens and plants and FFA activities.”
Pep Rally
Denson said a pep rally will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday ahead of the football team’s season opener at Benjamin.
“Our theme is going to be ‘The Bikers vs. The Surfers’ and we’re going to ‘Wipe Out the Mustangs’,” he said.
Bus to Game
All Moran students will have the opportunity to attend Friday’s game by riding the bus with the team. The bus will depart at 3:30 p.m.
“The team, cheerleaders, and all the students will be riding one bus together to and from the game,” Denson said.
Denson said a bus will transport students to and from all road games.
