More than two dozen Moran elementary and junior high students competed in the district UIL academic meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cross Plains.

The competition actually began on Nov. 18 with students submitting entries for chess puzzle and ready writing events.

Moran principal Jo Hise said this week’s competition included speaking events on Tuesday. Contests for music memory, spelling, number sense, art smart, dictionary skills, listening skills, and maps, graphs and charts were held Wednesday.

Moran competes in District 13-1A with Baird, Eula, Cross Plains, May, and Rising Star. District is the highest level at which students can compete in academic contests before reaching high school.

Hise said instructors work with students to enter them in events for which they are best suited.

“We do allow them choices in some things, and we guide them toward their academic strengths,” she said. “For instance in spelling, some of the teachers have used UIL spelling words as their classroom spelling words for the last several weeks so the students could practice. We encourage all the kids to participate and see what other strengths they may have so they will be familiar with them.”

Moran was represented by 25 students ranging from fourth grade through eighth grade.

FFA Area Banquet

Moran will have more than a dozen FFA students in attendance Monday at the Area IV FFA banquet in Abilene.

“We haven’t gone the last few years,” Denson said. “In fact, we have so many going, we’re having to borrow FFA jackets from Cisco.”

Thanksgiving Meal

Hise said Moran had a good turnout for its Thanksgiving meal, which was held Nov. 18 before school let out for a one-week break.

“We had lots of people and the food was really good,” she said.

 Back To School

Moran resumed classes on Monday and the district will remain on its regular schedule through the end of the fall semester.

Semester tests are scheduled for Dec. 14-15 with the final day before the Christmas break on Dec. 17.

Jan. 3 will be a staff-development day with classes resuming Jan. 4.
