MISD starts year Monday with 110 students

Moran Independent School District started the 2018-19 school year on Monday, Aug. 27.

“We had a great start to this school year,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “Students and teachers alike were excited to see each other again after a long summer break.”

The 110 students on Monday was down by 20 from the first day of school last year, but only 10 less than at MISD at the end of the 2016-2017 year.

“Our small class sizes continues to be a draw for many parents seeking more individualized academic attention,” Freeman said. “We are still currently taking applications for up to 10 transfer students.”

Moran has two children in pre-K and five in kindergarten this year, down considerably from last year’s eight pre-K and nine kindergarten students.

There are nine first graders, 11 in second, four in third, three in fourth, eight in fifth, and 12 in sixth grade.

Middle school grades have 10 and six students in seventh and eighth grades respectively.

There are 11 freshmen, nine sophomores, eight juniors, and 12 seniors for a total of 40 students in the high school, two less than one year ago.

Students and staff will get a break after only one week, with a Labor Day holiday planned Sept. 3.

Campus Upgrades

Over the summer the MISD campus was able to complete a major overhaul of the kitchen, lay new carpet in the library and auditorium, and improve security.

“We are excited about the near completion of a campus-wide security upgrade that involves new surveillance equipment and auto-locking exterior doors with remote granted access features,” said the superintendent.

Back-to-School Event

Last Thursday, the PTO hosted an ice cream contest and social, followed by the annual Meet the Bulldogs/Meet the Teacher event at the high school auditorium.

“Gay Williams won our homemade ice cream competition with her caramel apple recipe and I am embarrassed to say that it was much better than my rocky road ice cream,” said Freeman.

Other participants in the ice cream competition were Jo Hise with peach, Myra Hise with Butterfinger, and Sabrina Swedlund with chocolate.
