MISD staff continues work
By Kathy Thomson
This school year is ending much differently than it normally does, but even with all of the unexpected changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, staff members at the Moran Independent School District are already preparing for next year.
“We are interviewing a few new teachers, and we are in the process of starting our pre-K and kindergarten roundup,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “Kim Holland is retiring, so we are looking for a new English teacher. We have a good staff right now, and I am hoping that she is the only one that we will have to replace.”
Freeman said that Holland has been in Moran her entire professional career.
“Kim has been a classroom teacher, principal, and testing coordinator,” he said. “She has worked here for 28 or 29 years.”
The opening for a new English language arts instructor was posted earlier this month on the Region 14 website, and Freeman said that several applications have already come in.
Teachers chosen for interviews are given the option of selecting either an online, Zoom, or face-to-face interview with Freeman and principal Jo Hise.
Pre-K and K Roundup
Parents interested in enrolling their children in pre-K or in kindergarten for the upcoming school year at MISD are encouraged to begin the process.
“We will have a more formal announcement in the near future,” said Freeman, “but any parents interested in sending a child to Moran can contact us by email or Facebook, and we’ll arrange to get them a packet.”
The superintendent’s email address is dfreeman @moran.esc14.net.
Purple and Gold Masks
As per recommendations by the governor, the staff at MISD is wearing face masks and practicing social distancing.
The purple and gold masks were made and donated by MISD parent Kelly Skiles for the essential staff members who need to be on campus.
“Thank you, Mrs. Skiles, for our Bulldog masks,” said Freeman. “We are thankful for everyone coming together and taking care of each other during this unprecedented time.”
Athletic Equipment
Even though the school year will continue until May 29, all spring UIL sports have been cancelled.
Head coach John Hughes is sorting through equipment, and he has requested that junior high and high school athletes return any school athletic equipment they have at home and retrieve any personal items left in the locker rooms.
“I am going through and cleaning up the locker rooms,” coach Hughes said. “Any personal property that I find, I will place in the weight room for pick up. Also, if you have any uniforms or other equipment that belongs to the school, we need that back as well.”
Hughes said that athletes should contact him or one of the other coaches (Jo Hise, Matthew Hise, and Elizabeth Martin) to arrange a time to be admitted into the building.
