MISD science students travel to San Marcus

Moran’s freshman and junior students participated in an aquatic biology field day earlier at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Moran science teacher Matthew Hise said the program provided a general overview of different kinds of environments. The freshman students are taking biology, with the juniors involved in an aquatic science class.

“We  don’t have aquifer water in our area,” Hise said. “It was an experience to see aquatic organisms that are totally different from what we have in our area.”

The program included collecting and analyzing samples from the San Marcos River.

“We went back to the lab and identified all the organisms and different insects that we found,” Hise said. “This indicates the health of the ecosystem.”

The trip included a stop at Inner Space Cavern at Georgetown, where the group observed the physical act of water seeping into the Edwards Aquifer.

“It’s clean, clear water that’s been filtered by the porous limestone in the Balcones faultline area,” Hise said.

The teacher hopes that students gained a better understanding of ecological factors.

“We talked about how what unhealthy aquatic ecosystems means for aquatic life,” he said. “Or vice versa – what does aquatic life tell you about the health of that environment?”
