MISD to pay teachers’ insurance

By Sam Waller

The Moran ISD school board voted Monday, June 27 to cover insurance for district teachers for the coming year.

“That’s something we can do to show our teachers we appreciate them,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said, “to thank them for sticking around.”

Denson said the perk will be reevaluated on a year-by-year basis.

“If the money’s not there next year, we might not be able to do it,” Denson said. “I’m going to do my best to make sure the money’s there.”

Denson added that Moran has no faculty openings at this time.

“We’re very blessed that we have all of our spots full,” he said.

Meat Camp

Moran FFA members Allen Hebel, Ellis Hise and Cotten Campbell attended their second meet judging camp of the summer last week at West Texas A&M.

Denson said the trio enjoyed a successful camp with Hebel and Hise ranking among the top five individuals at the camp, which was held Thursday-Saturday, June 23-25.

“They got divided into teams for contests,” Denson said. “Allen Hebel’s team was the champion of the Quiz Bowl and Ellis Hise’s team was reserve champion in the Quiz Bowl.”

Denson said the benefits of attending camps at Texas Tech and WT are immediately apparent.

“I know the level the kids are competing at is a lot higher than what they were this time last year,” he said. “It’s just measuring their improvement. They scored higher at WT than they ever have.”

Next on the schedule is the state FFA convention July 11-15 in Fort Worth.

“The whole officer team will go,” Denson said.

Summer School

Moran finished summer school classes this week with the final day of the session on Thursday, June 30 (today).

“We’ve had a good turnout,” Moran principal Jo Hise said.

The summer session wrapped up with a field trip to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center at Glen Rose.

“We’re going to treat them to a day,” Denson said.

Other Programs

Moran’s cheerleaders attended cheer camp this week at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

Moran’s summer conditioning program will be on hiatus next week before resuming Monday, July 11.

Workout sessions will be 8:00-10:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday through July 21.

Workouts are open to all seventh through 12th graders who plan to participate in athletics next fall.
