MISD parents to vote on length of school day

Parents of students and prospective students at Moran Independent School District have been asked to look over possible changes to the 2019-2020 school year calendar and then fill out an online survey.

Both the calendar and the survey can be accessed from the MISD website home page at www.moran.esc14.net.

The modified schedule would lengthen the school day to last until 4:00 p.m. each regular day, 22 minutes longer than the current release time of 3:38 p.m. The proposed calendar also includes several scheduled half days with a 12:00 noon release.

“This schedule was created in an effort to reward excellent academic achievement, attendance, and behavior for several of our students,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “Students who meet requirements and have parental authorization will be excused from school attendance on specific days. Parents and Moran ISD will both have the authority to require students to attend every school day if needed or requested.”

The schedule will be considered by the trustees at the next regular board meeting on May 20.

Parents and others with a vested interest in the decision should go the MISD website and take the survey before May 20, so the school board members can contemplate their input before making a decision.

“Consideration to this calendar will only occur if parental support is overwhelmingly positive,” Freeman said. “Please help us with your input via completing the survey online, a hard copy at your request, or by calling the school office. It is our desire for this schedule to improve attendance, academic performance, and enrollment in Moran ISD.”

There are only 11 questions on the survey, so it can be completed fairly quickly. Ten of the questions require only a simple yes or no response, and one asks the survey taker to choose between three possible answers.
