Moran faculty and staff have spent this week conducting inservice programs in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Inservice began Monday, Aug. 1 and will conclude Friday, Aug. 5.

The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 8 at Moran, which is employing a four-day class week this year.

Superintendent Dr. John Denson said inservice has dealt with a number of issues facing schools.

“School safety is a major concern,” Denson said.”We had a law enforcement officer talk to us Tuesday about safety. We’ve been doing our door audit and safety audit.”

Denson said vaping is another growing concern.

“Kids are able to hide that stuff and be undetected,” he said.

Meet The Teacher

Moran will hold “Meet the Bulldogs” and “Meet the Teacher” activities Thursday, Aug. 4 (tonight).

Starting at 5:00 p.m., the PTO will serve hamburgers at the football field concession stand. “Meet the Bulldogs” will start at 5:30 p.m. on the football field, with “Meet the Teacher” starting at 6:00 p.m.

Principal Jo Hise said registration packets can still be picked up during the evening.

All students planning to attend Moran schools for the 2022-23 school year will need to pick up packets from the MISD office.

Hise said students will need to provide an immunization record, a birth certificate and a copy of their Social Security card in order to get a packet.

Special Presentation

Denson, Hise, and three other Moran faculty members gave a presentation Thursday, July 28 on how to “share students” during the Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas convention in Corpus Christi.

Also on hand were athletic director John  Hughes, ag teacher Minnie Denson, and teacher/coach Matthew Hise.

“We talked about sharing students between academics, athletics and agriculture,” John Denson said. “For instance, there’s a district coaches meeting this week, and Minnie is going to attend in case there are some dates on the calendar she knows about that they don’t.”

Denson said a good example is Tarleton State University’s annual career development event.

“That’s a big deal, and schools from all across the state go to it,” he said. “Other schools will be trying to jockey students around, too.”

New Teacher

Moran is adding just one new faculty member this year, but is getting a bonus.

Josh Ross will teach math, while his wife, Nissa Ross will serve as a teacher’s aide.

Josh Ross is a graduate of East Texas Baptist University. Nissa Ross earned a bachelor’s from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and a master’s from Dallas Baptist University.

“Josh is certified in math all the way through high school,” Denson said. “He’s also a certified music teacher, so we’re going to be adding solo and ensemble competition because of his background.”
