Shackelford County commissioners confirmed times for upcoming public hearings and meetings, along with discussing repairs to a Precinct 2 bridge and title insurance for Precinct 4 voting site.

The elected officials will already need to meet for two required public hearings and then one special session to vote on the budget and tax rate before the end of the month. They opted to move the regular fourth Monday meeting time to coincide with the Friday, Sept. 20 hearing and avoid conflicting with a jury trial on Sept. 23.

The first tax rate hearing is set for Sept. 16, followed by the one on Sept. 20. The commissioners plan to vote on the proposed $4,329,454 budget and 58.91-cent tax rate at a special Sept. 30 session.

Pct. 2 Bridge

Precinct 2 commissioner Ace Reames reported that he and Precinct 3 commissioner Lanham Martin had met with a contractor to look at “cracked skirting” on a bridge on CR 179.

County judge Bob Skelton said that the damage, which can’t be readily seen from the road, was thought to have occurred during flooding on Oct. 21, 2018, based on a video that he had been given.

“We will need to take bids for the repair,” said Skelton, “but it’s encouraging that this company is willing to bid.”

No action was taken because the bridge repair was not listed on the agenda.

Voting Site

Skelton was given authority to spend up to $500 to secure title insurance for the Rock Hill School property, as well as other costs that might occur while proceeding with plans to find out who the property belongs to.

County elections for Precinct 4 voters have been held at the former school site for decades, and extensive repairs are needed in order to continue utilizing the building.

Pct. 4 commissioner Cody Jordan also asked about local exterminators who might be willing to get rid of large numbers of wasps and bees at the Rock Hill School.

Other Business

•A bid from American National Leasing Co. was accepted for two vehicles for the Shackelford County sheriff’s department.

•The commissioners adopted a required resolution to support the 2020 U.S. Census.
