The Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show is adding a commercial steer class for the 2023 show in January, with an informational meeting to be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 (tonight) at the County Show Barn.

Any 4-H or FFA members interested in the new event are encouraged to attend.

According to Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell, the project involves feeding out a pen of three steers. The objective is to highlight the commercial cattle industry and provide 4-H and FFA members a learning experience emphasizing selection, record keeping, feeding, animal health, industry standards, public speaking and technical knowledge.

State Winner

Shackelford County 4-H member Gage Burton made a big haul recently at the Texas State 4-H Horse Show, bringing home a championship buckle.

The state show was held July 24-29 at Brazos County Expo in Bryan.

Competing with his right arm in a cast, Burton placed in five events in the Junior age division.

In addition to winning the stock horse trail event, Burton placed sixth in reining, seventh in stock horse pleasure, and eighth in cow boxing. He also placed 10th in stock horse showmanship.
