A few Albany High School students competed in the Wylie Valentine UIL Classic last Saturday, bringing home several medals and ribbons.

Albany students placed in three of the journalism events, including news writing, feature writing, and editorial writing, while one entrant placed in mathematics.

“Our kids did great,” UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “The journalism  kids were competing against 1A through 6A competitors, while the non-writing events were broken down into smaller classifications both by grade level and school size.”

Sophomore Avery Everitt took first place in news writing, and junior Robyn Trail was fourth.

In feature writing, Everitt placed second, and junior Sidney Russell was fifth.

Russell also earned second place in editorial writing, followed by Everitt in sixth place.

Sophomore Jonathan Coody placed sixth in mathematics, competing in the 9th and 10th grade level of the 1A-3A division.

“I was really proud of Jonathan too, because we have not had any time to meet together to discuss the mathematics test,” Davis said.

Several students are also competing in a virtual meet being hosted this week by Stamford ISD.

“They will take the tests this week with their sponsors, and we will submit the grade to Stamford,” Davis said. “If there is a writing component to a test, that will submitted electronically to the judges.”

Journalism competitors are not eligible to participate in the virtual meet this week since it uses the same prompt materials used at the Wylie meet.

The District 10-2A meet is set to be held in Stamford on March 22, with the top three places advancing to the Region 2 UIL Academic Meet at Grayson College on April 21-22. The state meet is set for May 17-18 in Austin.
