Local youths place at West Texas Fair

The West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene ran from Sept. 6-15 and several Shackelford County Youth held their own against exhibitors from across the state, including three locals that won blue ribbons in the steer show, and three others that caught animals during the calf scramble on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Results are listed below. 

Junior Steer Show 

Class 7 medium weight American progress – 4. Kamryn Browning; Class 20 light weight Angus – 2. Cade Neve; Class 26 heavy weight Hereford – 4. Gracie Price; Class 42 heavy weight Shorthorn – 3. Calf Scramble

Six local youth participated in the calf scramble at the rodeo in Abilene last Wednesday, and three of the Shackelford County youth were able to win a certificate that can be used toward the purchase of any animal that can be shown at the 2019 fair. They may purchase breeding or market cattle, sheep, goats, swine, rabbits or poultry.

On Wednesday night, Sept. 12, 10 calves were turned loose in the arena with 25 4-H and FFA contestants. The youth had to catch, halter, and lead a calf to the designated area to win.

Winners received certificate money in amounts from $870 for first place to $315 for 10th place.

Riley Green placed second, Clara Holson eighth, and Carli Edgar 10th.
