Shackelford County veterans and families are invited to attend a Veterans Day celebration at the high school gym on Thursday (today) beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Several musical presentations are planned by various school groups including the third grade music classes, the Albany Fiddlers, and the high school band.
Almost 100 invitations were sent out to veterans and families inviting them to attend the ceremony that will recognize each veteran or spouse of a deceased veteran that is present.
The event was coordinated this year by high school office secretary Ann Riley.
“We tried to update our list this year, and hopefully we have everyone on it,” Riley said. “There will be an address list in the foyer of the gym for veterans and families to update information.”
The Albany Cub Scouts will present the Colors, followed by the National Anthem played by the junior/senior high school bands.
Student council officers will conduct the ceremony, with principal Glen Hill introducing the veterans in attendance. There will be a special section for veterans to be seated in chairs on the gym floor.
A musical performance will be given by third grade students that includes “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Thank a Vet.”
A group of Albany fiddlers directed by Robbin Westmoreland will present a patriotic medley, followed by a patriotic salute to veterans performed by the Albany band.
Refreshments will be served in the foyer of the gym following the ceremony hosted by the Family Consumer Science classes.
Student Council president Sarah Cotter will give the welcome, followed by the Pledge to the American flag by vice president Luke Ivy. Secretary Ty Everitt will lead the Pledge to the Texas flag, and treasurer Gracie Price will read a patriotic poem.
Jaci Chapman, reporter, and parliamentarian Cole Chapman will serve as ushers and greeters.
The sixth grade leadership team from Nancy Smith Elementary will also assist with the program.
