Local students show in San Antonio, San Angelo

Local FFA and 4-H youth braved the winter weather and participated in the recent San Angelo and San Antonio stock shows, with the San Antonio show still going on this week.

San Antonio Show

Albany FFA sponsor and ag instructor Chris Beard said eight exhibitors showed gilts Feb. 10 to Feb. 12 during the first week of the San Antonio Livestock Show.

Carter Carrion earned seventh place with his Duroc gilt.

Also showing gilts at San Antonio were Cooper Carrion, Allison Lemond, Averie Burns, Kara Burns, McCoy Vaughn, Makenna McNeill, and Madeline Stapp.

San Angelo Show

Myleigh Leveridge took fifth place with her Shorthorn Plus that she showed in the San Angelo heifer division Feb. 10-11.

A total of 13 students made the trip to San Angelo Feb. 12-14. to show Stargilt Purebreds.

MaeKayla Kersey took sixth place with her Chester gilt and Madeline Stapp earned ninth place with both her Hampshire gilt and her Yorkshire gilt.

Kealey Rogers was eighth with a Hampshire gilt and Judson Rogers was 10th with a Poland gilt.

Also showing gilts were Lemond, Vaughn, Donald McCullough, Carter Carrion, Cooper Carrion, Averie Burns, Kara Burns, Brycen Turnbow, and Lanxton Viertel.

Due to hazardous weather conditions, the decision was made to return home on Sunday, Feb. 14, and exhibitors did not show in the Purebred or Crossbred divisions.

Beard was proud of the efforts put forth by his students, especially with the winter weather putting up obstacles.

“The kids did a great job at both San Antonio and San Angelo,” said Beard. “As always, they re­presented Albany very well.

4-H Workshops

Shackelford County Extension Agent and 4-H sponsor Kloey Painter has scheduled a horse clinic at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 at the show barn. 

Participants will go over conformation when riding and how a horse moves, among other topics. 

The photography clinic that was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, was cancelled due to the weather and will be rescheduled.
