Local students to compete at state rodeo

Two Albany High students will be competing in the Texas High School Rodeo Association State Finals next week, June 9-15 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. 

Addie Beth Denton qualified in goat tying, and Mady Connally earned her way to the THSRA state finals in pole bending. 

Contestants competed in rodeos throughout the year in one of 10 regions across the state. At the last rodeo of regional level competition, the top 10 competitors in each event were announced. These contestants were given the opportunity to represent their region on the state level at the THSRA state finals.

Denton’s first run will be on Monday, June 10 in the New Barn, with events starting at 8:30 a.m. Denton will ride again for round two of the competition in the rodeo at the Coliseum on Friday, June 14, at 9:00 a.m.

Connally will compete in round one of pole bending on Tuesday, June 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the Coliseum, and again for round two on Wednesday morning at the rodeo in the Coliseum at 9:00 a.m.

The girls are trying to secure a spot in the short-go of competition which will take place at the finals rodeo on Saturday. 

The top 15 of the 100 contestants in each event will qualify for the final rodeo performance in the Coliseum at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. 

The best four in each event will continue on to the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming on July 14-20.

Tickets

Tickets are $4 for students and $7 for adults for the preliminaries, and $5 and $8 for the finals on Saturday.

Season passes are $60 for adults and $40 for students.

TSHRA

The THSRA is a 501-C non-profit organization sponsoring over 125 rodeos per year throughout 10 Texas regions. The rodeo year begins in August and concludes with the Texas High School Finals Rodeo in June, where the top cowboys and cowgirls from each region compete for numerous awards, scholarships, and the honor of representing Texas at the National High School Finals Rodeo held each July.

Students must maintain certain academic standards through out the school year in order to be eligible to compete.
