With just a week left before the official deadline, a large percentage of the county-wide taxes have yet to be collected, according to figures received Tuesday from the central appraisal district (CAD) office.

Taxes assessed during 2018 are officially due next week, on Thursday, Jan. 31, according to chief appraiser Clayton Snyder.

Just a little over 24 percent of the total levy had been collected by the end of the year, but a number of payments have been received since then, and Snyder expects to be very busy for the next week.

At the close of December 2018, overall collections of the current tax year came to 24.07 percent or $2,332,880 of the total levy of $9,690,857, compared to 27.89 percent for the same period in 2017.

“All the entities are behind where they were last year, but I see no indications that the overall final collection rate at the end of the regular collection period will be significantly different,” said Snyder.

The chief appraiser isn’t sure why in-person payments have been less than normal.

Snyder explained that there are a small number of “individually significant” taxpayers, mostly corporations, who tend to wait until right before the deadline to pay their taxes.

“That’s the reason the collection rate is typically so volatile between December and January,” said the chief appraiser. “Last year, the overall current tax year collection rate jumped from approximately 27 percent at the end of December 2017 to 92 percent for January 2018.”

Collections Totals

As of year-end, the tax office had collected 43.06 percent compared to 53.21 percent last year for the City of Albany, 22.65 percent compared to 27.3 percent for Albany ISD, 21.57 percent compared to 24.05 percent for the hospital district, 26.08 percent compared to 30.76 percent for the City of Moran, 35.88 percent compared to 40.52 percent for Moran ISD, and 21.11 percent compared to 23.52 percent for Shackelford County

Payments can be postmarked Jan. 31 or earlier, placed in the drop box outside the tax office by Friday morning, Feb. 1, paid online at www.shackelfordcad.com, or made in person by the end of the working day on Jan. 31.
