Shackelford County residents will be able to enter their prize pecans in the upcoming 2020 Abilene Area Pecan Show on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

According to Shackelford County Extension Agent Kloey Painter, entries will be accepted starting Monday, Nov. 23 with a deadline of 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30.

“To enter the show, exhibitors will need to submit 42 nuts of each pecan variety in a resealable plastic bag,” said Painter. “Exhibitors can bring their pecans to the local office and I will deliver them, or they can take them directly to the Taylor County Extension Office between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 30.”

Painter also said if producers are not sure of the variety of pecan, they don’t have to worry.

“All entries will be classified before being judged,” Painter said. “Pecans will be cracked and shelled on Monday Nov. 30 and judged on Tuesday, Dec. 1.”

Entries will be on display at the Taylor County Extension Office from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Nuts and awards are available for pickup after 6:00 p.m. with any entry not picked up becoming the property of the Taylor County Extension Office.

Pecan Bake Show

A Pecan Bake Show also will be held in conjunction with the pecan show. There are two divisions: adults ages 18 and over and youth younger than 18.

Contestants may submit only one home baked entry per class, with each entry containing pecans as an ingredient, not a decoration.

The 11 entry classes are: Pie, Cake made from scratch, Cake made with a mix as a base but has other ingredients, Cookies and Brownies, Brittle Candy, Praline Candy, Fudge and other chocolate candy, Other candy and confections (divinity, toffee, dipped/flavored pecans, Roasted/toasted pecans, and Quick loaf bread or muffins, Yeast Bread (sweet dough or regular).

Entries in the first four classes must submit six pieces for judging. Other classes should have 12 pieces for judging except for six muffins or one loaf.

Each entry must be submitted with a copy of the recipe with the exhibitor’s name and class number on the back of the recipe.

Public viewing will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

“Ribbons will be awarded to the first six places in each class,” said Painter. “Sweepstakes winners also will be awarded in both the youth and adult divisions.”
