Local man killed in wreck Feb. 22

Seventy-six-year-old Steve Sanders of Albany was killed in a fiery crash shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when his SUV hit a Semi truck tractor hauling a load of rocks.

The preliminary investigation by DPS Trooper Jonathan Lafrenz ofAnson says that the truck was traveling south on Hwy. 6 approaching a curve about six miles south of Albany. Sanders’ 2019 Ford Ecosport was northbound, approaching the same curve when he crossed the line into the path of the truck.

The SUV overturned, ejecting the driver from the vehicle, which then caught on fire in the east right-ofway. Thetruckcontinuedto travel south for a short distance on the east side of the highway, crashing through a fence, and catching on fire in a pasture.

The Albany man wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, according to the DPS report.

The truck was driven by Rangel Jorge Ramirez of Houston, who was not reported as being injured.

Sanderswaspronounced dead on the scene by Justice of the Peace James Breeden.

Lafrenz was assisted by fourotherDPSofficersfrom Albany, Breckenridge, and Abilene. Also responding were Shackelford County and City of Albany law enforcement andcountyEMS, as well as fire fighters from both Albany and Moran.
