The filing period for local elections opened Wednesday for several entities such as the school board, city council and hospital board and will continue until Friday, Feb. 18.

The election date set by the state for all local elections is Saturday, May 7.

Candidates have the 30-day filing period to sign up for a spot on one of the local boards or councils.

There is no filing fee for the local races, although one county-wide position does require prospective candidates to submit a petition signed by 10 registered voters in order to enter the race.

Albany City Council

According to City Hall, three seats on the council expire this year currently held by Lester Galbreath, Ragan Riley, and Austin Sherwood. Each of positions is for a two-year term of office.

Applications are available at Albany City Hall.

The top three candidates receiving the most votes will win the positions in the at-large election.

Anyone seeking additional information can contact City Hall at 325-762-3133.

Applications to file for the election are available at the superintendent’s office.

Hospital Board

The Shackelford County Hospital District’s board has four two-year terms expiring this spring including Chris Beard, Myra Hise, Janna Ledbetter, and John Peterson.

Election information and application are available at the district’s office in the EMS building. Contact Regina Whitt for more information at 325-762-3313.

Hospital board candidates must have their application petition signed by 10 currently registered Shackelford County voters in order to file.

“We usually recommend getting two or three extra citizens to sign in case someone isn’t a currently registered voter,” Whitt said.

The Moran city council will fill three at-large positions for two-year terms on the council this spring.

The seats are currently occupied by Dora Cook Leonard, Tyler George, and Kimberly York.
