Local blood drive set Thursday

A blood drive is scheduled to take place in Albany this afternoon, July 5, and Hendrick Regional Blood Center (formerly Meek Blood Center) will park its bloodmobile at First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Blood drives in Albany have been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club for over 20 years.

Donors can give whole blood up to six times a year, and each donation can potentially save as many as three lives, according to information from the blood center.

According to donor recruiter Frances Baker, a unit of blood is less than a pint, and the average adult body contains 10 to 12 pints of blood.

“Your body makes new blood constantly, and the fluid you give will be replaced within hours,” said Baker.

Anyone at least 17 years of age (age 16 with written parental consent) can donate. There is no upper age limit.

Donors should bring a photo ID issued by the state, school, or U.S. government.

Baker also encouraged donors to eat a low-fat, high protein meal two to four hours before their donation, and drink plenty of non-caffeinated beverages, such as water or juice to help replenish lost fluids.

Strenuous activity should be avoided for 12 hours after giving.

Taking medications is not an automatic deferral. Most medications are acceptable.

Donors will receive a T-shirt, according to Baker.

Those who have eligibility questions can call 325-670-2880.
