Library reading program to continue

The Albany Study Club sponsored summer reading program at the Shackelford County Library kicked off this Tuesday, and it will continue to be held every Tuesday during the month of June.

Participants began this week with the topic “Blast off to the MOON,” with the overall theme for this year’s program listed as “A Universe of Stories” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing.

The program will continue on June 11, 18, and 25, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 a.m.

Children who attend will be able to enjoy story time, have fun with crafts and games, and eat a snack.

Children from the ages of two through four, and from kindergarten to fourth grade are encouraged to attend. An adult should accompany younger children to the program.

The program gives children who might not be able to read in the summer a chance to do so.

“Summer break can contribute to achievement gaps in students between grades,” said library committee chairman Janna Ledbetter. “Reading during the summer increases prior knowledge needed to succeed in the coming school year. The more that children read throughout the summer, the more they can comprehend difficult texts.”

The Shackelford County Library is open to the public from 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

The library is located at 402 N. 2nd, and can be contacted by calling 325-762-2672.
