Did you know that you can get free eBooks and audiobooks? Rather than paying a monthly subscription fee to listen to audiobooks or read eBooks on a mobile device, readers can gain access to thousands of titles at absolutely no cost to them.

The Shackelford County Library can provide access to eBooks and magazines that can be read on phones or tablets, and audiobooks for an “in-app” audiobook player.

Overdrive has an app called Libby that is available for both Apple and Android devices. Search for Libby or Libby by Overdrive, and download the app for free.

“You will need your library member number and a phone number to gain access to the collections,” said local librarian Karen Noble. “If you are not currently a member, you will need to either call or come by the library during regular hours. You will be assigned a member number at that time.”

Those who are already members can ask the librarian for a member number.

“When you download the app, it will ask you to select your library (Shackelford County Library) and will then ask for your member number and phone number,” said Noble. “You may also set up a password if you prefer.”

The app allows readers to set up a profile of the types of books preferred, and then it will email them suggested titles based on those choices.

“You may also browse the collection until you find a title that you want,” Noble explained.

She warned that sometimes, books are not currently available, just as in a regular library.

“Once you decide to “borrow” a book, it will download to your device for a set time,” said Noble. “At the end of that time, it will be gone from the app.”

Those who have questions or need help setting it up can come to the library on Mondays and Noble will help them.

Library hours are Mondays 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:00-5:30 pm.,and Wednesdays and Fridays 12:00-5:00 p.m.
