Albany Little League opened its 2023 season with a barn-burner Monday, March 27 as the Oilers edged the Reds by one run in the last inning.

League organizer Paul Hamilton said he expects the level of competition to remain high throughout the season.

Hamilton said 160 players are participating from T-Ball through Intermediate age groups. With the Major and Minor groups each having four teams, scheduling is much easier this year, he said.

The Eagles played the Indians on Tuesday, March 28, with the rest of the opening week against out-of-town opponents. On Thursday, (tonight), the Oilers host the Haskell Rockies. On Friday, the Indians host Cisco #2 while the Reds visit the Haskell Padres and the Eagles visit Cisco #1.

Each team is scheduled to play 13 games with the season ending May 26.

Hamilton also urged patrons to make use of the park’s concession stand.

“Courtney Clegg is running the concession stand this year and is doing a very good job,” he said.

Monday’s game also served as the unveiling for the new restroom at the Little League complex.

The league is again planning an outing to the Texas Tech-Abilene Christian college game on Tuesday, April 25. The travel party will depart at 4:15 p.m. from Nancy Smith Elementary School.

Softball Association

The Albany Softball Association’s season continues with 13 games for five teams in three age groups over the next week.

The 12-and-under Lady Rebels get things started at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 30 (tonight), when they visit Anson. The Lady Rebels host Ranger at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, then visit Breckenridge at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6 in their final game before Easter.

The 10-and-under Albany Fire visit Cisco at 6:00 p.m. Monday, April 3 and host Breckenridge at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, while the Diamond Divas will be in Breckenridge on April 3 and Cisco on April 6.

In the 8-and-under age group, White Lightning hosts Cisco at 5:30 Friday, March 31, with Red Thunder playing Cisco immediately after. Both teams visit Stamford on Monday, April 3, with White Lightning playing at 6:00 p.m. followed by Red Thunder. White Lightning will host Cisco for a double header starting at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6.

The ASA has 57 girls participating.
