The Old Jail Art Center’s summer workshops got underway this week, with both in-person and virtual camps on the calendar for students in first grade and up.

On Wednesday, campers met in the museum’s Stasney Room for the traditional Cultural Connections Camp, which this year highlighted Greek art and culture based on pieces in the Old Jail’s permanent collection.

A virtual workshop was also offered for Cultural Connections, with a video posted Wednesday morning. Kits had been mailed to those participants, who can access online instructions at their convenience.

Students in grades 1-3 will spend a “wild day” of crafts and games in next week’s on-site Safari camp on Tuesday, Aug. 9. That workshop will not be offered virtually.

Students who are registered for the Safari camp are reminded to bring sack lunches for the class, which will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Then, starting the next morning, the popular puppet workshop will be online only. Conducted Aug. 10-12, videos will be available on demand to registered participants.

Students will design and construct their own puppets, guided by professional puppeteers.

Unfortunately, the “Re-Create” camp scheduled for this Friday, Aug. 5 was cancelled due to low registration, according to OJAC education programs coordinator Kirsten Hahn.

Fewer numbers for the in-person camps are possibly due to recent increases in COVID cases.

“Physical camps held lower registrations this year, while our virtual camps were popular for the third year in a row,” said Hahn. “We are hoping on-site participation will increase next summer.”

Virtual camps are able to reach a wider audience, with kits shipped out across the state.
