One of five candidates for three Moran city council positions withdrew from the race during the past week, and Moran officials clarified that a sixth candidate had filed for a one-year unexpired term rather than a full two-year term, as had been previously reported.

Moran city secretary Teresa King said Friday that after consulting with the Texas Municipal League, she found that the unexpired term that will be on the ballot this May will only span one year instead of two.

Christal Herrell is the only candidate who filed for the remaining one year of a two-year term formerly held by Stanley Reeves. Herrell was recently appointed to fill the post until the May election.

King also stated that incumbent Cindy Huskey, one of five who had filed for the three two-year terms up this cycle, withdrew from the race this week, leaving four candidates on the ballot.

Moran voters will choose from John Steninger, Carlton Edgar, and incumbents Dora Cook Leonard and Tyler George to fill the three at-large, two-year seats available in the May election.

Two other entities – Albany ISD and Shackelford County Hospital District – also have contested races and will hold elections on May 2.

The other three local governing bodies – Albany city council, Moran school board, and Fort Griffin SUD board – do not have any contested races and are expected to cancel their elections.

Elections will take place on Saturday, May 2, with early voting to be offered April 20-28.

AISD Trustees

Voters will choose between Paul Johnston and incumbent Ginny Ivy for Place 2 on the Albany school board.

Robert Montgomery will return unopposed to the Place 1 seat.

Albany school board members serve three-year terms.

Hospital Board

Those who vote in the  Shackelford County hospital board election will choose from among incumbents Myra Hise, John Ayers, and Janna Ledbetter, appointee Chris Beard, and newcomer John Peterson to fill the four at-large seats up for election this cycle.

Hospital directors are elected to two-year terms.
