Fort Griffin State Historic Site drew a larger than expected crowd last Friday for the School Day portion of its Living History Days.

Assistant site manager Eric Abercrombie said about 650 school children attended Friday’s program with teachers and parents adding to the crowd.

“I think we exceeded expectations on Friday,” Abercrombie said. “We had the 600 we were anticipating, plus quite a few more than that. A lot of home-school families and a couple of private schools came that we didn’t have on our list.”

Among the event’s attractions were such holdovers as the site’s Texas Longhorn herd, camel corps, artillery crews, and settlers. New features included cavalry from Fort Hood, a dulcimer band, and loom demonstrations.

“It was a lot of fun,” Abercrombie said. “We had more artillery than we were expecting. That always adds a good element to the whole experience.”

Abercrombie said Saturday’s attendance of about 200 was closer to expectations.

“We didn’t advertise real heavily for the event this year, so we weren’t expecting a huge turnout,” he said. “The weather was a little warm, but that was much better than rain.”

Abercrombie said plans are already being made for next year with the event scheduled for Oct. 7-8, 2022.

“Living History Days are always on Columbus Day weekend, the second weekend of October,” he said.
