Honor Society officers elected

Members of the National Honor Society elected officers last week and discussed upcoming projects for the school year.

Presley Green was elected as president of the group, while Ashley Richards was named vice president. Cole Chapman will serve as secretary, and Ella Webb was picked as treasurer. Leddie Leech will serve as reporter.

All of the officers are seniors and were inducted into the organization last fall during their junior year.

Members of the current junior class who meet grade requirements are expected to be notified in the next week with an invitation to apply for membership.

New members must fill out an application detailing their activities, awards, honors and community service, which will then go to a faculty council to be considered for induction into the group.

The local chapter has a new sponsor this year, with math teacher Ashley Terrell taking the post, assisted by FCCLA teacher Jennifer Marshall.

Terrell said that the grade criteria needed to be invited to apply has changed. In the past, a student had to have an overall GPA of 90 or above to be invited to apply. While the grade criteria remains at 90 this year, it will be based on the four core classes of math, science, language, and history, plus any foreign language courses. Electives will no longer be included in the grade calculation.

“Also, members must compete in at least one UIL academic event both their junior and senior years to maintain their membership,” Terrell said. “We will hold an assembly next week for the high school students to explain the changes that are being made.”

The sponsor said that she expects that the group will continue to sponsor the local Toys For Tots drive in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Other projects are also being considered.

Honor Society members are required to log at least six hours of community service during each semester of membership.
